Gypsy Spirit Mission: Weddings and Other Ceremonies

I founded the Gypsy Spirit Mission in 1995 when I was legally ordained as a non-denominational minister in order to perform a friend's wedding ceremony, and hurriedly needed a name with which to present my "congregation" to the families of the bride and groom. The name Gypsy Spirit Mission embodied the mixture of spirituality, multiculturalism and creative community that I sought, and to my surprise the wedding attendees embraced my spiritual purpose, despite the dubious origins of my sacerdotal authority.

While I do not subscribe to formal religions, the congregation's ethos is essentially the same as GypsySpiritMission.com's: to inspire and promote creative expression, a sense of community, and a spirit of good will. The Gypsy Spirit Mission was conceived as a place where everyone is welcome; where members are asked to contribute what they can in order to strengthen the community. We strive to remain as inclusive and undogmatic as possible with these principles in mind.

The establishment of the Nomad Café in Oakland, California was our way of geographically formalizing this community that had been established in cyberspace. This allows you, my co-conspirator, the opportunity to travel to the Mission in the flesh or at the privacy of your own keyboard. Either way I hope you will discover belonging, creative support and a forum for expression . and I hope you will come back often.

I have performed wedding ceremonies in various U.S. locations on the West and East coasts. They are often multicultural, multiethnic, even multilingual events. They are always joyous, celebratory, and performed with humor and sincerity. I coordinate and oversee the process of acquiring and filing the marriage certificates, and work closely with both partners to tailor the ceremonies themselves to everyone's desires. And yes, in case there is any doubt, the ceremonies are legally binding and fully recognized.

I look forward to new opportunities to provide this service, particularly for friends and fellow gypsies. Of course my authority is not limited to weddings. I provide blessings of all sorts - for newborn children, housewarmings, the planting of special gardens - as well as funeral ceremonies and other celebrations of passing or achievement. Limited speaking engagements ("sermons") at your non-denominational church may also be arranged.
